You’ll meet staff from various departments, including Student Services, International Student Support, Academic Advising, and more, who are here to help you navigate your academic, social, and personal life in Canada. This ceremony is a great opportunity to connect with fellow international students, ask questions, and learn about the resources available to make your transition to TRU as smooth as possible.

Culture in the Classroom

The Culture in the Classroom session at Orientation is designed to help international students understand the unique academic culture at TRU and what is expected of you in the Canadian classroom. This session will cover important topics such as classroom etiquette, communication with professors, and how to participate effectively in discussions. You’ll learn about the emphasis on critical thinking, collaboration, and independent learning in Canadian education. The session will also guide you through common academic expectations, like proper citation practices, the importance of time management, and how to balance group work with individual assignments. Our team will also provide you with tips on how to succeed in Canadian classrooms and where to seek help if you need academic support. Additionally, students will discover opportunities for involvement on campus, from student clubs and events to leadership development programs. TRU Student Services is committed to ensuring that international students have the tools and support needed to thrive in their studies, build meaningful connections, and make the most of their time at TRU.

Hike at Kenna Cartwright Nature Park

Led by our own TRUSU KIS Hiking Club (trusu.ca/club/tru-hiking-club/) a hike at Kenna Cartwright Nature Park offers an exciting and scenic way to explore the natural beauty surrounding Thompson Rivers University (TRU). As part of the international student orientation, this hike allows newcomers to connect with the local environment, meet fellow students, and enjoy breathtaking views of Kamloops and the surrounding hills. The park features a network of trails suitable for all fitness levels, providing an opportunity to immerse in the outdoors while learning about the region's flora and fauna. Whether you're an avid hiker or simply looking for a relaxed stroll, the hike at Kenna Cartwright is the perfect introduction to the natural wonders of your new home in Kamloops.

Students will gather at the foyer of the International Building before heading out together.
